S.I. No. 227/1988:

NATIONAL ARCHIVES ACT, 1986 (AUTHENTICATION OF DOCUMENTS) REGULATIONS, 1988.

I, CHARLES J. HAUGHEY, Taoiseach, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by section 19 of the National Archives Act, 1986 (No. 11 of 1986), hereby make the following Regulations:

1. These Regulations may be cited as the National Archives Act, 1986 (Authentication of Documents) Regulations, 1988.

2. (1) The following provisions shall apply in relation to the seal of the National Archives (in this Regulation referred to as "the seal"):

( a ) The seal shall be used to authenticate copies of and extracts from archives in the custody of the National Archives, and may be used to authenticate other documents issued by the National Archives.

( b ) The Director and such other officers of the National Archives as may be designated by the Director from time to time may certify that copies of and extracts from archives in the custody of the National Archives are true and authentic.

( c ) The seal shall be affixed by the Director or an officer of the National Archives designated by the Director for that purpose to every copy or extract certified under paragraph (b).

( d ) Every copy or extract certified under paragraph (b) shall be deemed to be a true and authentic copy or extract of the original, until the contrary is shown.

( e ) The seal, when affixed to a document other than a copy of or extract from archives in the custody of the National Archives, shall be authenticated by the signature of the Director or of an officer of the National Archives designated by the Director for that purpose.

(2) In these Regulations "the Director" includes an officer appointed under section 4 (4) of the National Archives Act, 1986 , to perform the functions of the Director.

EXPLANATORY NOTE.

This Order sets out the provisions to apply in relation to the authentication of copies of documents which are sought from the National Archives.
