SOLICITORS (PRACTISING CERTIFICATE 1997 FEES) REGULATIONS, 1996. |

The Law Society of Ireland, in exercise of the powers conferred on them by Section 82 of the Solicitors Act, 1954 and by Section 22 of the Solicitors (Amendment) Act, 1960 (as substituted by Section 30 of the Solicitors (Amendment) Act, 1994 ) HEREBY MAKE the following Regulations: |

1. (a) These Regulations may be cited as the Solicitors (Practising Certificate 1997 Fees) Regulations, 1996. |
||||||||||||
(b) These Regulations shall come into operation of the 1st day of January 1997. |
||||||||||||
2. (a) In these Regulations, unless the context otherwise requires: |
||||||||||||
"applicant solicitor" means the solicitor the subject matter of an application delivered to the Registrar; |
||||||||||||
"application" means the form of application for a practising certificate set out in the Schedule to the Solicitors (Practising Certificate 1997) Regulations, 1996 ( S.I. No. 401 of 1996 ) purporting to be completed and signed by an applicant solicitor personally; |
||||||||||||
"Registrar" means the registrar of solicitors appointed pursuant to Section 8 of the Solicitors Act, 1954 . |
||||||||||||
(b) Other words and phrases in these Regulations shall have the meanings assigned to them by the Solicitors Acts, 1954 to 1994. |
||||||||||||
(c) The Interpretation Act, 1937 applies to the interpretation of these Regulations as it applies to the interpretation of an Act of the Oireachtas. |
||||||||||||
3. On the coming into operation of these Regulations, the Solicitors (Practising Certificate 1996 Fees) Regulations, 1995 ( S.I. No. 350 of 1995 ) shall cease to have effect except in respect of an application for a practising certificate for the practice year commencing 1st January 1996 or any earlier practice year. |

4. As and from the coming into operation of these Regulations, the appropriate registration fee together with the annual contribution to the Compensation Fund specified in the Schedule to these Regulations shall be paid to the Society by an applicant solicitor. |
||||||||||||
5. As and from the coming into operation of these Regulations, the fee payable by a personal who applies in writing to the Registrar, pursuant to Section 17 of the Solicitors (Amendment) Act, 1960 , for a copy of an entry on File A or File B shall be as specified in the Schedule to these Regulations. |

EXPLANATORY NOTE |
||||||||||||
The registration fee payable by a solicitor on application for a practising certificate is increased from £545 to £555 for a solicitor admitted three years or more on 1st January 1997 and from £380 to £390 for a solicitor admitted less than three years on 1st January 1997. The annual contribution to the Compensation Fund for the practice year commencing 1st January 1997 remains at £600 for each solicitor irrespective of date of admission. The fee payable on an application for a copy of an entry on File A or File B remains at £5. |
