ABATTOIRS ACT, 1988 (VETERINARY EXAMINATION) (AMENDMENT) REGULATIONS, 1998.

ABATTOIRS ACT, 1988 (VETERINARY EXAMINATION) (AMENDMENT) REGULATIONS, 1998.

I, JOE WALSH, Minister for Agriculture and Food, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by section 39 of the Abattoirs Act, 1988 (No. 8 of 1988) and section 3 of the European Communities Act, 1972 (No. 27 of 1972), for the purpose of implementing Council Directive 95/23/EC(1) in so far as it relates to the veterinary examination of animals and meat hereby make the following Regulations:

(1)O.J. No. L 243 of 10.10.1995.

1. (a) These Regulations may be cited as the Abattoirs Act, 1988 (Veterinary Examination) (Amendment) Regulations, 1998.

(b) The collective citation "The Abattoirs Act, (Veterinary Examination) Regulations, 1992 to 1998" shall include these Regulations.

(c) The Abattoirs Act, 1988 (Veterinary Examination) Regulations, 1992 to 1998 shall be construed together as one.

2. These Regulations shall come into force on the 2nd day of February, 1998.

3. The Abattoirs Act, 1988 (Veterinary Examination) Regulations, 1992 ( S.I. No. 89 of 1992 ) are hereby amended by

(a) the substitution in Part II of the First Schedule of the following subparagraph for subparagraph (k) and the insertion of subparagraph (l) as follows:

" (k) the veterinary inspector forms the opinion that the condition of the hide, fleece or skin of an animal, as a consequence of faecal soiling or the presence of adherent material, is such as to increase the risk of cross contamination of the carcase during carcase dressing procedures.

(l) the veterinary inspector otherwise finds the animal to be unfit for slaughter for human consumption."

(b) the addition in Part II of the Second Schedule, subparagraph (b) (iii) of "macroscopically visible" before "sarcocystosis".

EXPLANATORY NOTE.

These Regulations amend the grounds upon which animals or meat may be declared to be unfit for human consumption.
