COUNTY OF CARLOW LOCAL ELECTORAL AREAS ORDER, 1998

The Minister for the Environment and Local Government in exercise of the powers conferred on him by sections 3 and 24 of the Local Government Act, 1994 (No. 8 of 1994), hereby orders as follows:

1. This Order may be cited as the County of Carlow Local Electoral Areas Order, 1998.

2. (1) The County of Carlow shall be divided into the local electoral areas which are named in the first column of the Schedule to this Order.

(2) Each such local electoral area shall consist of the area set forth in the second column of the Schedule to this Order opposite the name of such local electoral area.

(3) The number of members of the council of the County of Carlow to be elected for each such local electoral area shall be the number set forth in the third column of the Schedule to this Order opposite the name of that local electoral area.

3. Every reference in the Schedule to this Order to an electoral division, urban district or townland shall be construed as referring to such electoral division, urban district or townland as existing at the date of this Order.

4. (1) A reference in the Schedule to this Order to a line drawn along any road, street, lane or railway line shall be construed as a reference to an imaginary line drawn along the centre of such road, street, lane or railway line.

(2) A reference in the Schedule to this Order to the point at which any road, street, lane or railway line intersects or joins any other road, street, lane or railway line shall be construed as a reference to the point at which an imaginary line drawn along the centre of one would be intersected or joined by an imaginary line drawn along the centre of the other.

(3) A reference in the Schedule to this Order to a line drawn along a road which consists of a dual carriageway shall be construed as an imaginary line drawn along the centre median of such dual carriage way.

5. The Carlow County Council Order, 1942, the Carlow County Council (Amendment) Order, 1974 ( S.I. No. 46 of 1974 ) and Article 2 of the County Electoral Areas (Amendment) Order, 1985 ( S.I. No. 109 of 1985 ) are hereby revoked.

Borris The electoral divisions of Ballyellin, Ballymurphy, Borris, Coonogue, Corries, Garryhill, Glynn, Killedmond, Kyle, Marley, Myshall, Rathanna, Sliguff, Tinnahinch. 3
Carlow No. 1 That part of the urban district of Carlow, (as extended by the Local Government (Boundaries) (Town Elections) Regulations, 1994) situated north and north-west of a line drawn as follows: 3
commencing at the intersection of the urban boundary by the Dublin Road (N9) and proceeding initially in a westerly direction along the said Dublin Road and Green Lane to the intersection of the said Green Lane by the Dublin to Waterford railway line; thence proceeding in a south-easterly direction along the said railway line to its intersection by Staplestown Road, thence proceeding in a westerly direction along Staplestown Road and Tullow Street to the junction of Tullow Street with Dublin Street and Burrin Street; thence commencing in a south-westerly direction and proceeding along Burrin Street and Kilkenny Road (N9) to the intersection of Kilkenny Road by the urban boundary;
the electoral divisions of Burton Hall and Johnstown, and the townlands of Aghanure, Bestfield, Newacre, Newgarden, Oakpark, Pollerton Little, Rathnapish and Strawhall in the electoral division of Carlow Rural.
Carlow No. 2 That part of the urban district of Carlow (as extended by the Local Government (Boundaries) (Town Elections) Regulations, 1994) which is not included in the electoral area of Carlow No 1; 5
the electoral division of Ballinacarrig, and the townlands of Carlow, Chapelstown, Kernanstown, Mortarstown Lower, Mortarstown Upper and Pollerton Big in the electoral division of Carlow Rural.
Muinebeag The electoral divisions of Agha, Ballymoon, Clogrenan, Fennagh, Kellistown, Leighlinbridge, Muinebeag (Bagenalstown) Rural, Muinebeag (Bagenalstown) Urban, Nurney, Oldleighlin, Rathornan, Rathrush, Ridge and Templepeter. 5
Tullow The electoral divisions of Ballintemple, Ballon, Clonegall, Clonmore, Cranemore, Grangeford, Hacketstown, Haroldstown, Kilbride, Killerrig, Kineagh, Rahill, Rathvilly, Shangarry, Tankardstown, Tiknock, Tullow Rural, Tullow Urban, Tullowbeg and Williamstown. 5

EXPLANATORY NOTE

The effect of this Order is to amend the division of County Carlow into county electoral areas and to fix the number of members to be elected for each electoral area.
