SCHEDULE 2

PRESCRIBED EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS-VETERINARY NURSE

The Veterinary Council of Ireland, in exercise of the powers conferred on it by section 65 and section 133 of the Veterinary Practice Act 2005 (No. 22 of 2005), hereby makes the following regulations:-

Citation

1. These Regulations may be cited as the Veterinary Council of Ireland (Prescribed Educational Qualifications) Regulations 2022.

Commencement

2. These Regulations shall come into force on the 1st July 2022.

Interpretation

3. In these Regulations—

“Act” means the Veterinary Practice Act 2005 (No. 22 of 2005) as amended;

“Council” means the Veterinary Council of Ireland established under section 11 of the Act;

“veterinary nurse” means a person registered under Part 8 of the Act;

“veterinary practitioner” means a person registered under Part 4 of the Act.

Prescription of educational qualifications for registration as a veterinary practitioner

4. The qualifications specified in Schedule 1 to these Regulations are prescribed by the Council pursuant to section 65 of the Act as the qualifications required to be obtained for registration as a veterinary practitioner pursuant to section 42 of the Act.

Prescription of educational qualifications for registration as a veterinary nurse

5. The qualifications specified in Schedule 1 to these Regulations are prescribed by the Council pursuant to section 65 of the Act as the qualifications required to be obtained for registration as a veterinary nurse pursuant to section 95 of the Act.

Revocations

6. The Veterinary Surgeons (Qualifying Degrees) Order 1954 ( S.I. No. 85 of 1954 ) is hereby revoked.

i. Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (MVB) – University College Dublin (National University of Ireland)

ii. Bachelor in Veterinary Science (B.Sc. (Vet.) - University College Dublin (National University of Ireland)

SCHEDULE 2

PRESCRIBED EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

VETERINARY NURSE

i. Bachelor of Science Veterinary Nursing (BScVN) – Dundalk Institute of Technology

ii. Bachelor of Science Veterinary Nursing (BScVN) – Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest Athlone Campus

iii. Bachelor of Science Veterinary Nursing (BScVN) – Atlantic Technological University

iv. Bachelor of Science Veterinary Nursing (BScVN) – University College Dublin

v. Level 6 Animal Science Advanced Cert (QQI L6 AnScVN) – St Johns Central College

EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the Instrument and does not purport to be a legal interpretation).

These Regulations set out the qualifications prescribed by the Council pursuant to section 65 of the Act as the qualifications required to be obtained for registration a veterinary practitioner pursuant to section 42 of the Act. These Regulations also set out the qualifications prescribed by the Council pursuant to section 65 of the Act as the qualifications required to be obtained for registration as a veterinary nurse pursuant to section 95 of the Act.

These Regulations may be cited as the Veterinary Council of Ireland (prescription of educational qualifications) Regulations 2022.

These Regulations come into operation on the 1st July 2022.
