1.(1) There shall be established a body corporate to be called the Police Authority for Northern Ireland (in this Act referred to as the "Police Authority") to which section 19 of the Interpretation Act (Northern Ireland) 1954 shall, subject to the provisions of this Act, apply. (2) It shall be the duty of the Police Authority to secure the maintenance of an adequate and efficient police force in Northern Ireland and to carry out all such functions as are conferred on them by this Act. (3) The constitution of the Police Authority shall be as provided in that behalf in Part I of Schedule 1 and the supplementary provisions in Part II of that Schedule shall have effect with respect to the Authority.
