EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the Regulations)

These Regulations amend the voluntary early retirement scheme ("the Scheme") for the Police Service of Northern Ireland and the Police Service of Northern Ireland Reserve (Full-time).

The Scheme contained provisions for officers of the rank of Chief Constable, Deputy Chief Constable and Assistant Chief Constable, ("ACPO ranks") in the Police Service of Northern Ireland, which differed to those for other ranks. This difference arose from the fact the ACPO ranks were employed on fixed term appointments of seven years at a time.

From 1st April 2004 the appointments were altered so as to introduce fixed term appointments of 5 years at a time for Chief Constable and Deputy Chief Constables, and a compulsory retirement age of 65 for Assistant Chief Constables.

These regulations amend the scheme so as to adjust the payments to the ACPO ranks to reflect their new appointment terms.
