The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, in exercise of the power conferred on him by section 17(3) of the Diseases of Animals Act 1950, and of all other powers him enabling, with the approval of the Treasury, hereby makes the following order:-
1. This order, which may be cited as the African Swine Fever (Compensation) Order 1980, applies throughout Great Britain and shall come into operation on 4th March 1980.
2. Where, under the power conferred by section 17 of the Diseases of Animals Act 1950 as applied to african swine fever by the African Swine Fever Order 1980, the Minister causes any animal to be slaughtered, he shall pay compensation as follows:-
(a)where the animal was affected with african swine fever the compensation shall be one half of the value of the animal immediately before it became so affected;
(b)in every other case the compensation shall be the value of the animal immediately before it was slaughtered.
In Witness whereof the Official Seal of the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food is hereunto affixed on 28th January 1980.

This Order prescribes the scale of compensation payable for animals slaughtered under section 17 of the Diseases of Animals Act 1950 because they were affected or suspected of being affected with african swine fever or had been exposed to the infection of that disease. The Diseases of Animals (Ascertainment of Compensation) Order 1959 (S.I. 1959/1335) will apply in respect of animals slaughtered on account of african swine fever.
