Whereas a draft of the following Order was laid before Parliament, and approved by resolution of each House of Parliament:
Now, therefore, Her Majesty, in exercise of the powers conferred on Her by section 2(4) and section 4(4) of the Supreme Court Act 1981(1), is pleased, by and with the advice of Her Privy Council, to order, and it is hereby ordered, as follows: -
1. This Order may be cited as the Maximum Number of Judges Order 1987.
2. Section 2(1) of the Supreme Court Act 1981, prescribing the maximum number of ordinary judges of the Court of Appeal, as increased by the Maximum Number of Judges Order 1983(2), shall be amended so as further to increase the maximum number of those judges to 28.
3. Section 4(1)(e) of the Supreme Court Act 1981, prescribing the maximum number of puisne judges of the High Court, shall be amended so as to increase the maximum number of those judges to 85.

This Order amends the Supreme Court Act 1981, by increasing the maximum number of ordinary judges of the Court of Appeal from 23 to 28, and increasing the maximum number of puisne judges of the High Court from 80 to 85.
