The Fire Services (Appointments and Promotion) (Amendment) Regulations 1988

In exercise of the powers conferred on me by section 18(1) of the Fire Services Act 1947(1) I hereby, after consultation with the Central Fire Brigades Advisory Council, make the following Regulations:

1. These Regulations may be cited as the Fire Services (Appointments and Promotion) (Amendment) Regulations 1988 and shall come into force on 10th February 1988.

2. In regulation 3 of the Fire Services (Appointments and Promotion) Regulations 1978(2) for paragraph (1) there shall be substituted the following provision -

"(1) A person shall not be appointed to be a chief officer of a brigade unless he has -

(a)served in the rank of Divisional Officer (Class 1), or in a higher rank, as a member of a fire brigade maintained by a fire authority in Great Britain under the Fire Services Act 1947 or by the Fire Authority for Northern Ireland, and

(b)completed the course for senior fire officers conducted by the Fire Service College and known as the Brigade Command Course.".

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Regulations)

These Regulations amend the provisions of the Fire Services (Appointments and Promotion) Regulations 1978 relating to eligibility for appointment as chief officer of a brigade. The minimum level of rank in which previous service is required is raised to Divisional Officer (Class 1). Completion of the Fire Service College's Brigade Command Course is also now required.
