In exercise of the powers conferred on the Secretary of State by section 81 of the Education Act 1944(1), the Secretary of State for Education and Science, as respects England, and the Secretary of State for Wales, as respects Wales, hereby make the following Regulations:
1. These Regulations may be cited as the Scholarships and Other Benefits (Amendment) Regulations 1989 and shall come into force on 1st September 1989.
2.-(1) In the definition of "school" in regulation 2(1) of the Scholarships and Other Benefits Regulations 1977(2), for the words "the Education Acts 1944 to 1976" there shall be substituted the words "the Education Acts 1944 to 1988".
(2) In regulation 4(a) of those Regulations, for the words "or special schools" there shall be substituted the words ", grant-maintained schools or special schools".

These Regulations amend regulation 4(a) of the Scholarships and Other Benefits Regulations 1977 (which permits local education authorities to defray the expenses of pupils taking part in school activities) by inserting a reference to grant-maintained schools. They also update the definition of "school" in those Regulations to refer to the Education Acts 1944 to 1988.
1944 c. 31; section 81 was amended by paragraph 6 of Schedule 12 to the Education Reform Act 1988 (c. 40). For the transfer of functions to the Secretary of State see S.I. 1964/490, 1970/1536 and 1978/274.
