HIGHWAYS, ENGLAND AND WALES

Coming into force
24th June 1991
1. The new highways which the Secretary of State proposes to constructalong the routes described in the schedule to this Order shall becometrunk roads as from the date when this Order comes into force.
2. The centre line of each of the new trunk roads is indicated by aheavy black line on the deposited plan.
3. In this Order-
(1) all measurements of distance are measured along the route of therelevant highway;
(2) (i) "the deposited plan" means the plan numbered A23/3A/65/2/1, marked"The A23 Trunk Road (Pease Pottage - Handcross Trunk Road andSlip Road) Order 1991" signed by authority of the Secretary of State and deposited at theDepartment of Transport, Romney House, 43 Marsham Street, London SW1P 3PY;
(ii)"the new trunk roads" means the highways mentioned in article 1 of thisOrder and"a new trunk road" means one of those highways;
(iii)"the Trunk Road" means the London - Brighton Trunk Road (A23).
4. This Order shall come into force on 24th June 1991 and may be citedas the A23 Trunk Road (Pease Pottage - Handcross Trunk Road andSlip Road) Order 1991.

The routes of the new trunk roads are routes between Pease Pottageand Handcross, both in the County of West Sussex, as follows-
(1) a route (labelled 1 on the deposited plan) about 3370 metres inlength, starting at a point on the Trunk Road immediately below thesouthern side of the Pease Pottage bridge over that road then goinggenerally southwards to a point on the Trunk Road immediately below thenorthern side of the Handcross bridge over that road; and
(2) a route (labelled 2 on the deposited plan) about 220 metres inlength, starting at a point on the route of the new trunk road mentionedat (1) above about 1260 metres south of its starting point then goinggenerally southeastwards to join the Trunk Road at a roundabout to beconstructed about 70 metres north of Yew Tree Cottage.
