The Treasury in exercise of the powers conferred on them by section 7 of the Finance Act 1977(1) and of all other powers enabling them in that behalf, hereby make the following Order:
1. This Order may be cited as the Alcoholic Liquor (Amendment of Units of Measurement) Order 1992 and shall come into force on 31st August 1992.
2. The Alcoholic Liquor Duties Act 1979(2) shall be amended as follows-
(a)In section 24(3) (restriction on carrying on of other trades by distiller etc) for the words "2 miles" there shall be substituted the words "3 kilometres".
(b)In section 69(2) (Miscellaneous provisions as to wholesalers and retailers of spirits) for the words "2 miles" there shall be substituted the words "3 kilometres".
3. This Order does not involve a greater charge to duty or a reduction of any relief, drawback, rebate or allowance.

This Order restricts the carrying on of certain other trades by a distiller or rectifier within 3 kilometres of his distillery or rectifying house. Prior to 31st August 1992 the restriction was within a distance of 2 miles.
This change is made in order to comply with EC Council Directive 80/181/EEC (OJ No. L39, 15.12.80, p.40) as amended by Council Directive 89/617/EEC (OJ No. L357, 7.12.89, p.28), which requires Member States to replace references in legislation to most imperial measurements by metric counterparts.
