The Secretary of State, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by sections 2(9) and 15(5) of the Local Government Act 1988(1), and of all other powers enabling him in that behalf, hereby makes the following Order:
1. This Order may be cited as the Local Government Act 1988 (Defined Activities) (Exemption) (Christchurch Borough Council and Purbeck District Council) Order 1998 and shall come into force on 16th December 1998.
2.-(1) The provision of information technology services(2) by-�
(a)the council of the borough of Christchurch ("Christchurch");
(b)the council of the district of Purbeck ("Purbeck"),
shall not be treated as a defined activity so long as it is carried out by Dorset County Council during the relevant period.
(2) For the purposes of paragraph (1), "the relevant period"-�
(a)for services provided by Christchurch is the period beginning with 16th December 1998 and ending immediately before 1st April 1999;
(b)for services provided by Purbeck is the period beginning with 16th December 1998 and ending immediately before 1st January 1999.
3. The Local Government Act 1988 (Defined Activities) (Exemption) (Christchurch Borough Council) Order 1997(3) is hereby revoked.

Under Part I (competition) of the Local Government Act 1988 work falling within certain defined activities may be carried out by local authorities only if particular conditions are fulfilled.
Article 2 of this Order exempts from the requirements of Part I the provision of information technology services-�
(a)by Christchurch Borough Council so long as it is undertaken by Dorset County Council between 16th December 1998 and 31st March 1999; and
(b)by Purbeck District Council so long as it is undertaken by Dorset County Council between 16th December 1998 and 31st December 1998.
Article 3 revokes the Local Government Act 1988 (Defined Activities) (Exemption) (Christchurch Borough Council) Order 1997.
