Coming into force in accordance with article 1(2)
In exercise of the powers conferred on the Secretary of State by section 8(1) and (2) of the Teaching and Higher Education Act 1998(1) the Secretary of State for Wales hereby makes the following Order:
1.-(1) This Order may be cited as the General Teaching Council for Wales Order 1998.
(2) This article and article 3 of this Order shall come into force on 30th December 1998, and article 2 shall come into force on 1st September 2000.
(3) In this Order, "the Act" means the Teaching and Higher Education Act 1998.
2. There shall be a body corporate to be known as the General Teaching Council for Wales which shall exercise, in relation to Wales, as from 1st September 2000, the functions conferred on them by or under Chapter 1 of Part 1 of the Act.
3. Section 1(2) and (4) to (9) of, and Schedule 1 to, the Act shall have effect in relation to the General Teaching Council for Wales as they have effect in relation to the General Teaching Council for England.

This Order, which is made under section 8 of the Teaching and Higher Education Act 1998, provides for the establishment of a body corporate to be known as the General Teaching Council for Wales ("the Council") on 1st September 2000, to exercise the functions conferred on them by the Act with effect from that date. The Order also applies, in relation to the Council, the provisions of section 1(2) and (4) to (9) of, and Schedule 1 to, the Act with effect from 30th December 1998.
