The A69 Carlisle to Newcastle Trunk Road (Haydon Bridge Bypass) Order 2006

  Made 27 September 2006 
  Coming into force 20 October 2006 

The Secretary of State for Transport makes this Order in exercise of powers conferred by sections 10, 41 and 106 of the Highways Acts 1980[1] and now vested in him[2], and all other powers inabling him in that behalf.

     1. —(1) This Order may be cited as the A69 Carlisle to Newcastle Trunk Road (Haydon Bridge Bypass) Order 2006 and shall come into force on 20 October 2006

    (2) In this Order, all measurements of distance are measured along the route of the relevant highway.

    
2. The new highway which the Secretary of State proposes to construct along the route described in Schedule 1 to this Order shall become a trunk road from the date when this Order comes into force.

    
3. The centre line of the new trunk road is indicated by a heavy black line on the plan numbered HA/10/MP/068, marked "The A69 Carlisle to Newcastle Trunk Road (Haydon Bridge Bypass) Order 2006" , signed by authority of the Secretary of State for Transport and deposited at the ODPM-DfT Records Management Branch, Floor 13 (IMD), Ashdown House, St Leonards on Sea, Hastings, East Sussex TN37 7GA.

    
4. The Secretary of State directs as respects any part of a highway which crosses the route of the new trunk road that—

until in either case, a date to be specified in a notice given by the Secretary of State to the highway authority for that highway. The date specified will not be later than the date on which the new trunk road is opened for traffic.

    
5. The Secretary of State is authorised to construct the bridge specified in Schedule 2 to this Order as part of the new trunk road.

SCHEDULE 1

ROUTE OF THE NEW TRUNK ROAD


The route of the new trunk road is about 2.9 kilometres in length, from a point on the existing A69, 200 metres west of the junction to West Rattenraw in the County of Northumberland, proceeding in a south easterly direction, then north easterly, to a point on the existing A69 Trunk Road, 180 metres east of the existing A69/A686 junction.



SCHEDULE 2

MAJOR STRUCTURE


The bridge carries the A69 Haydon Bridge Bypass over the Newcastle to Carlisle railway line, an access track alongside the railway and the River South Tyne and comprises a four span composite steel girder and insitu reinforced concrete slab deck supported on insitu reinforced concrete abutments and intermediate insitu reinforced concrete pier supports.

The four spans will be 42.5m, 39.7m, 41.5m and 41.75m measured on the centreline of the bridge. The bridge will be skewed at 50 degrees to the river supports and at 57 degrees to the railway supports. The deck will be continuous over the piers and fixed at the west abutment and with a movement joint at the east abutment and supported on bearings at the abutments and piers.

The overall width of the structure varies along some of its length due to the taper required for a traffic ghost island proposed to the west of the viaduct. The deck is a constant width of 11.80 metres from the east abutment until approximately Chainage 470m where it starts to widen towards the west abutment to a width of 13.70 metres.
