In exercise of the powers conferred on the Secretary of State by sections 551 and 569(4) and (5) of the Education Act 1996[1] and now vested in the National Assembly for Wales[2] the National Assembly for Wales makes the following Regulations: 1. - (1) These Regulations may be cited as the Education (School Day and School Year) (Wales) Regulations 2000 and shall come into force on 1st May 2000. (2) These Regulations apply only to Wales. (3) Regulation 10 of the Education (Schools and Further Education) Regulations 1981(c) is hereby revoked. 2. In these Regulations -

(b) attends a nursery school or nursery class for one only of two sessions,
it shall be sufficient to provide the pupil with one and a half hours of suitable activities. (This note does not form part of the Regulations) These Regulations revoke and replace regulation 10 of the Education (Schools and Further Education) Regulations 1981 in relation to Wales only. Regulation 3 makes provision about the length of the school day and the school year. Regulation 4 provides that not more than six school sessions devoted to the training of teachers in school teachers' appraisal, the school teachers' pay system or school staffing structures during the period 1st May 2000 to 31st July 2001 may be treated as sessions on which the school has met. Where more than four school sessions are devoted to such training during that period at least two must be in the 2000-2001 school year.
