SOCIAL WELFARE (MISCELLANEOUS PROVISIONS) ACT, 2002 (SECTION 16) (COMMENCEMENT) (NO. 2) ORDER, 2002

The Minister for Social and Family Affairs, in exercise of the powers conferred on her by section 17 of the Social Welfare (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 2002 ( No. 8 of 2002 ), hereby orders as follows:

Citation.

1. This Order may be cited as the Social Welfare (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 2002 (Section 16) (Commencement) (No. 2) Order, 2002.

Commencement.

2. Section 16 of the Social Welfare (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 2002 , in so far as it relates to Item 1 of Part 6 of the Schedule to the said Act, shall come into operation on 17 October 2002.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

This order provides for the commencement of section 16 of the Social Welfare (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 2002 , in so far as it relates to the amendment of section 1 of the Registration of Births Act, 1996 with effect from 17th October, 2002.

The amendment to section 1 of the Registration of Births Act, 1996 allows for the re-registration of a child's surname at the joint request of both parents.
