SUPREME COURT OF NORTHERN IRELAND

CONSTITUTION

The Maximum Number of Judges (Northern Ireland) Order 2001

  Made 14th March 2001 
  Coming into force 2nd April 2001 

At the Court at Buckingham Palace, the 14th day of March 2001

Present,

The Queen's Most Excellent Majesty in Council

Whereas a draft of this Order has been approved by resolution of each House of Parliament:

     Now, therefore, Her Majesty, in exercise of the powers conferred upon Her by section 2(3) of the Judicature (Northern Ireland) Act 1978[1] and of all other powers enabling Her in that behalf, is pleased, by and with the advice of Her Privy Council, to order, and it is hereby ordered, as follows: - 

     1. This Order may be cited as the Maximum Number of Judges (Northern Ireland) Order 2001 and shall come into force on 2nd April 2001.

    
2. In section 2(1) of the Judicature (Northern Ireland) Act 1978 (the High Court) for the words "not more than seven puisne judges" there shall be substituted the words "not more than nine puisne judges" and accordingly the Maximum Number of Judges (Northern Ireland) Order 1993[2] is hereby revoked.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the Order)


This Order amends section 2(1) of the Judicature (Northern Ireland) Act 1978 to increase from seven to nine the maximum number of puisne judges in Her Majesty's High Court of Justice in Northern Ireland.
